Have you checked out Ranelagh’s new ‘Bar & Kitchen’, formerly Russell’s and now reinvented as Taphouse? I have, and my review of it will run next Friday in the Indo’s Day & Night Magazine. (Tomorrow’s review features Forest Avenue, the new restaurant off Leeson Street which I bet you’re set to hear lots about if you haven’t already.) But in the meantime, there’s a little gathering tonight in Ranelagh’s Taphouse which might be of interest if you’re in the hood, and if you like the sound of free beer and cheese? Yesterday had a cyclical feel to it, a sun and the moon of a day. It was focussed on a great sweeping meander in and around Waterford city – but it always came back to the food. Which is quite right for Day One of my Irish Food Trip in the company of five of the country’s best young Euro-toques chefs and Caoimhe Ni Dhuibhinn from Failte Ireland.
After a light breakfast in Waterford Castle’s beautiful consevatory with the sun striping in through the wrought iron windows (when I say light breakfast, I mean a mini-croissant filled with sweet ham and artisan cheese) we headed out with the hotel’s head chef Michael Quinn to meet some local food legends.
WHAT? The second annual Lughnasa Beer Festival, brought to you by Deveney’s of Dundrum, one of Dublin’s leading purveyors of specialist beers from Ireland and around the world. From pilsners to porters, ales amber and ales pale, from krieks and blondes to weiss beers and stouts, there’s something for everyone here.
WHEN? Friday 19 August, from 5.30pm til 9.30pm (don’t worry, there’ll be plenty of soakage in store, with food from Siam Thai, Pieminister and Hog-Roast.ie.)

I recently received an email from an American journalist from Kansas City who was writing a piece for the House & Home section of her local paper. The piece was about entertaining for St Patrick’s Day, and she wanted to know what would be all the rage here in Ireland for our national festivities. You know, what do we always cook up to impress our mates here on Paddy’s Day, what avant-garde table settings are we all about today, the parlour games we love to play – that kind of thing.
