WHAT? Five-course tasting menu devised and cooked by FOOD&WINE Magazine Chef of the Year 2011, Mickael Viljanen (ex-Gregan’s Castle) to celebrate five years of Alexis Bar & Grill in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
WHEN? Monday March 5th 2012, from 7.30pm
WHERE? Alexis Bar and Grill, Patrick Street, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin
WHO? The restaurant is owned and run by Alan and Patrick O’Reilly – but quite rightly the chef and his front-of-house sibling are letting someone else do the lion’s share of the work for their birthday party. They have drafted in none other than the most exciting chef currently cooking in this country for the big night. Finnish chef Mickael Viljanen has been plying his considerable talent in Gregan’s Castle against the startling backdrop of the Burren’s lunar landscape for the last few years, where he put Simon & Freddie Haden’s idyllic second-generation country house hotel firmly on the foodie map. Now Mickael has been wooed up to the big smoke of Dublin city by chef-restaurateur Eamonn O’Reilly of One Pico fame, and is due to head up The Greenhouse Restaurant on Dawson Street (formerly Bleu) when it opens in late March. In the meantime, Mickael is splitting his time between carefully handing over the reins to his talented sous chef down in Gregan’s Castle (which should remain an attractive destination for lovers of good food, old-school comfort and unique scenery) and fluting round the country cooking up a storm in any kitchen he can get his hands on. Recent moonlighting dinners have included VM Restaurant in Viewmount Country House, Co Longford and Paul Flynn’s The Tannery, Dungarvan, Co Waterford, and reports of each were worthy of such a talented chef at the top of his game.
HOW MUCH? €80 per head, including champagne and canape reception followed by a five-course tasting menu, matched with biodynamic wine pairings. So, pretty good value so – as you’d expect from a restaurant which has been repeatedly commended and awarded for its keen value at various national restaurant awards.
